Bankruptcy filings for U.S. consumers increased by 39.2 percent in November 2008 for the same period one year ago.

November 2008 consumer filings totaled 99,925. This represents a slight decrease from the October 2008 filings which numbered 106,266.

Even with the slight decrease in U.S. consumer bankruptcy filings, we are still poised to see almost 1.1 million new cases filed prior to the end of this year. This number represents the highest figure in filings since Congress adopted new bankruptcy laws in 2005.
